More on Chris Klewe

A few weeks ago I posted a story about the Minnesota Vikings punter, Chris Kluwe's, vocal support for gay marriage, along with a link to the inspired letter he wrote to a Maryland legislator. He has since, at the urging of his wife, posed shirtless for Out Magazine, and it's a photo spread that will sell a few issues.

When I read that letter of his to the legislator, I knew this was not anybody's average dumb jock. It should not come as a surprise that he is a truly fascinating character. The NY Times has a profile of him, if you want to know more.

There are gay marriage (or ban gay marriage) initiatives on a few state ballots this year, and I've read that human rights supporters have the most reason to be optimistic in Maine. It might well become the first state to legalize same-sex marriage by a vote of the people. I believe that the initiatives on the ballot in Maryland and Minnesota are both written so as to ban gay marriage. According to the NY Times article, the polls in Minnesota show the voters to be evenly decided, with only 4% undecided. If we win in Minnesota, and the ballot issue is defeated, it will almost certainly be because of Klewe's influence.

I loved the letter, but aside from being entertaining and humorous, if it had been anything other than "on the right side," it would have been condemned.

Of course, in this situation, I would like to know how this idiot got elected. And I found Mr. Klewe's letter to demonstrate your claim that he is not a "dumb jock.". Not covered was the courage for the Raven's player to speak up, but that had to be something.

Your attribution of any success in MN to Mr. Klewe's letter may be a bit over the top. Not everyone makes up their mind on that basis, but maybe it influenced the tiny "undecided" group that has to swing over. There are lots of people in MN, I would think, who already understand the situation.

Honestly, Gerry, as you and I have discussed in other venues, I just can't figure out why the various groups and individuals are against a legal, public vow of devotion given from one person to another simply because the two people are gay or lesbian. It can't be simply because they can then have some of the financial "benefits" (not so great in a lot of ways) like filing a joint return? I don't even know what some of those may be!!

It is apparently based on some sort of Biblical admonition, but then the Bible admonishes women to not cut their hair, yet I don't see those same groups picketing hair care places.

Enjoyed the letter, not so much the anonymous letters that followed, but I have to quit reading that crap on any web site. The letter was pretty hard on that poor legislator. Pretty demeaning.

As I remarked before, punters are so mean.

I don't think anyone on the other side could write with such withering sarcasm (and that's the best kind of sarcasm, you know) about the idiocy of people who believe in full human rights and dignity. That is why that side is destined to lose; just a matter of time. They can sputter and fume, but they can't compete in the arena of articulate indignation.

When there are supposedly only 4% of voters who are undecided, I don't think it's over the top to say that a popular public sports figure taking a position contrary to what people expect from their sports stars, can have a determining role, especially if he converts some of the straight white male population. The other side might still win anyhow, but our side will have been aided by Klewe. I don't know how to put a percentage number on it though.

As regards the bible, I always come back to the Goldwater statement that he didn't understand why the religious right gets so worked up about homosexuality, when there are so many other sins that don't seem to bother them at all.
