Carter at 87

I think it is worth mention that the bar for judging the activities of ex-Presidents would be pretty low if it weren't for the two Democrats, Carter and Clinton.

Nixon worked on rebuilding his image, Ford played golf and sat on the boards of a few corporations, Reagan can be excused for obvious reasons, Bush Sr. went home and sulked, and Bush Jr. goes to some Ranger baseball games so he can sit with Nolan Ryan and bask in his reflected popularity.

Carter and Clinton, however, are both using their position and prestige to do some good in the world.

The following are the final two paragraphs of a NY Times article about Carter's and The Carter Center's involvement in what is happening in Egypt. Would that all politicians were so honest.

But he (Carter) also acknowledged that in retrospect the Egyptian revolution had cast a new light on the alliance he helped forge with Egypt’s military-backed strongmen, first President Anwar el-Sadat and then his successor, Mr. Mubarak. Many Egyptians, he said, now complain that for three decades the United States supported a dictatorship at odds with its values to preserve peace with Israel.

“I think that is true, we were,” he said. “And I can’t say I wasn’t doing that as well.”
